Welcome to Steve Roberts' Page
I was very pleased to be asked to be an Ambassador for the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation’s Grow On Campaign. My cancer journey started around 14 years ago. I was healthy, in good shape, and had no symptoms. However, as I was turning 50, my doctor suggested that I have a PSA test (a life saving suggestion!!). At the time, I had no idea what that was, but always followed my doctor’s advice and had it done. The results were quite high for a man my age and after many more PSA tests and two biopsies, I was sitting in my urologist’s office a year and a half later and was told I had prostate cancer. That is news no one should ever have to hear, but I tried my best to stay positive.
Many specialist appointments and tests followed, and I decided after much research that having a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy was the best option for me. Unfortunately, at that time, Windsor did not have the equipment needed for that surgery and I had to travel to Hamilton, along with many other men from our community, to have my surgery. Thankfully, a few years later the Foundation ran a campaign to raise the funds required to purchase the Da Vinci machine that we now have in Windsor. I got involved in that campaign because I knew it was important for men in our community and I knew all of the money raised would stay here in Windsor. I continued to stay involved with the Foundation and raised money for prior Grow On Campaigns and I am currently the Chair of the Foundation so I know first hand that all funds raised stay here in Windsor to help raise cancer awareness, assist with needed equipment and treatment and fund research.
My cancer story has a happy ending and I have lived a very full and eventful life these past 14 years. I have continued to stay active and have ran numerous half-marathons and Tough Mudders and continue to play basketball weekly (prior to COVID that is). But most importantly, two years ago, I walked my daughter down the aisle at her wedding and last month, I was with her after she gave birth to my grandson. Those are the important things in life that I plan to keep on enjoying for many years to come.
So please, give generously to this year’s Grow On Campaign!!
My goals for this year's Grow On Campaign in the month of November are as follows: Grow a beard, raise $5,000, run/walk 100km, do 1000 sit ups and 600 push ups. Please help support me in these goals!
Nov 24/20 Update: I have now run/walked well over 100 km, and done more than 1,000 sit ups and 600 push ups and I am just today very close to my $5,000 goal. Thanks so much everyone! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your support!
